Living It Labyrinth

The interest in labyrinths

Tania has had a passion for labyrinths for many years.   Simply drawing labyrinths on pieces of paper and following the path with her fingers or drawing them on the sand on the Eastern Cape, Wild Coast and KZN beaches and then walking them.  The first permanent labyrinth Tania walked stirred a desire to create her own.  Many years passed and eventually she turned their family home into a Holistic Centre – Soul Space - boasting East London’s first labyrinth.

Gert became fascinated with labyrinths and the special energy they hold and radiate into the surrounding environment in the Soul Space Labyrinth.  Since his first walk we have walked labyrinths together whenever our travels have led us to one…

Alas, the only aspect of Soul Space that continues to exist is the Studio.  Here Tania continues to craft candles for inspiration and meditation (www.soulspace.co.za).  The Soul Space Studio is a part of our Roodekrans home in Gauteng and yet again has created the base for another budding holistic centre – Living It!

Birth of the Living It Labyrinth

Our little koi pond desperately needed a facelift.  So, in January 2008 we created a beautiful pond that offers a special place of calm and quiet contemplation…  A huge deciduous tree, however, shadowed the pond and our special friends were not enjoying the debris they had to contend with during the autumn months.  After much thought and deliberation the tree gave its permission to be removed, provided that we created something beautiful in its place!

It took quite a few months of planning and pacing.  We counted the pennies, anticipated the sweat, sore muscles and sunburn, and set off to get the ball rolling.  The tipper dumped a load of soil, the terracing blocks arrived and we eagerly started building the retaining wall – would you believe, we finished the wall in a day!

The next morning, muscles sore and aching, we had a look at our hard work and decided we could do better – so, after a bit of head-scratching we broke down the wall and carefully started again…  a few days later the retaining walls were built, the paving stones and pebbles laid, the plants planted and the heavens parted and shed the first of the big summer rains…  blessings from above!

At last, the fish are delighted, the tree has been honoured, and we are a little more enlightened!

Using a Labyrinth

Creating a labyrinth, building one from scratch, is a very big learning curve for all involved.  The highs, the lows, the ups and the downs… step by step, brick by brick, the labyrinth points out your short comings and your strengths…  as an individual and as a team – continually spiraling into your Self and back out into All That Is.

Building a labyrinth creates a sacred space and place – walking a labyrinth imbues it with power and meaning.  A labyrinth becomes more powerful as a symbol of transformation the more it is used.

A labyrinth has an unicursal path - designed for you to find your way.  A maze with its turns, twists and blind alleys - is designed for you to lose your way.

The Living It Labyrinth is based on the classical design (or seven circuit/path) known as the Cretan Labyrinth.  Labyrinths of various designs are found in most cultures and date back more than 4000 years.  For centuries labyrinths have been used as tools of meditation and prayer – a means of getting in touch with yourself.

The use of a labyrinth is not connected to any form of religion - everyone is welcome.

You are invited to walk the labyrinth and we trust that in doing so, you will find your way back to your soul.  We are all on a path.  We are always exactly where we need to be on the path.  The labyrinth is symbolic of our life’s journey – either individually or collectively.  Walking a labyrinth takes you on a journey to the centre of your innermost self and back out into the world with a broadened understanding of who you are – the journey takes you out of your ego and into “that which is within”.
